Therefore, you prostitute, listen to this message from the Lord! This is what the Sovereign Lord says: "Because you have poured out your lust and exposed yourself in prostitution to all your lovers, and because you have worshiped detestable idols, and because you have slaughtered your children as sacrifices to your gods, this is what I am going to do. I will gather together all your allies--the lovers with whom you have sinned, both those you loved and those you hated--and I will strip you naked in front of them so they can stare at you. I will punish you for your murder and adultery. I will cover you with the blood in my jealous fury. Then I will give you to these many nations who are your lovers, and they will destroy you. They will knock down your pagan shrines and altars to your idols. They will strip you and take your beautiful jewels, leaving you stark naked. They will band together in a mob to stone you and cut you up with swords. They will burn your homes and punish you in front of many women. I will stop your prostitution and end your payments to your many lovers. Then at last my fury against you will be spent, and my jealous anger will subside." (Ezekiel 16:35-42, NLT)
During the first forty years of my life, I gave myself up in detestable ways worshiping love and significance in all the wrong ways…and places. It was not until God allowed me to be completely destroyed by my actions and go through the natural consequences that I was redeemed by Him.
Sodom was known for their detestable acts of sexual sin—adultery, fornication and homosexuality. But, Sodom was not destroyed for the sexual sin. It was destroyed because of pride, laziness, gluttony, and unconcern for the poor and needy. They were acting upon their selfish desires that lead to what we consider gross sins.
All sin is gross sin. Sin comes from the root of selfishness. And sin always produces consequences. But, the wonderful thing is that God does not leave us there. When we acknowledge the sinful actions…specific sinful actions…He redeems us. He turns his love back to us and allows us to share in His holiness (Romans 3:21-26).
How are you prostituting yourself? Is it the rooted in seeking a relationship, not giving of your time and money, speaking harsh words about or to another, or laziness in building your relationship with God?
Recognize it. Confess it. Be redeemed by His love and receive the inheritance of His holiness.
